Phoenix Point, the open world, turn-based strategy title from Julian Gollop’s Snapshot Games, has landed on crowd-funding service Fig.
With Phoenix Point landing on Fig, more information has also been made available for the game.
Here’s the premise:
“An unusual virus (the Pandoravirus) discovered in melting permafrost excites the scientific community. It has a massive genome, and only 1% of its genes match anything in existing databases. Once unleashed, the seas transform in something totally alien. Then the mutagens began to invade the land via an airborne microbial mist.
“The human population has been decimated. Survivors gather in isolated havens spread throughout the world. A few factions control most of the havens and resources, but they have radically contrasting ideologies and guard deep secrets.
“The Phoenix Project is a worldwide organisation designed to be activated when the world is in peril. You control one cell of the organisation, gathering some of the world’s best scientists, engineers and soldiers. After your cell is activated, you realize that you have no contact with any other cells. You need to find out what happened to them.”
In the game, the Pandoravirus mutates living forms and incorporating DNA from multiple species and “clone them rapidly.”
What this means, that as a human, players will face alien forms which can mutate and evolved into new forms in response to player tactics. This is accomplished via the game’s procedural generation system, to provide a variety of challenges for players while on the battlefield. There will also be large bosses to engage, some of which will have multiple abilities for attack.
During each mission, players will send out squads of four or more soldiers, sometimes with either aerial or ground based drones, to engage in turn based battle.
Soldiers will have endurance and a willpower stat which can be used to spend on special abilities. Each will gain experience through battles and training, and each class has its own skill tree. Skill knowledge is earned from research and interaction with other human factions through trading, alliances or conflict.
There many other mission types and objectives, often based on interactions with the other human factions. Some will ask players to help fight off aliens, some will ask for assistance with rescues, assassinations and various other tasks such as assaulting alien bases and taking down giant alien land walkers.
Quite a bit more on the game can be found over on the Phoenix Point funding page, along with some concept art, gifs and reward tiers.
In development since March 2016, Phoenix Point needs $500,000 by June 7 in order to be funded. As of press time, $192,239 has been pledged toward the project.
A release date other than an estimated Q4 2018 isn’t currently unknown, but it will be released for PC, Linux and Mac through digital channels such as GOG and Steam.
